1. How to Apply to the Breaking Barriers with TELUS Friendly Future Foundation and Riipen Program

Are you interested in joining the Breaking Barriers program? Great! Here's a step-by-step guide to help you apply, check your eligibility, and prepare for success.

Updated over a month ago

Step 1: Apply Through the Student Landing Page

Starting October 6, visit the Breaking Barriers student landing page to complete an intake form to:

  • Submit your application for the Breaking Barriers program.

  • Confirm your eligibility for the program.

Important: Make sure to use a valid email address when you apply - all program updates and notifications will be sent there.

Note: Submitting an Application Doesn’t Guarantee a Spot.

Here are a few key things to keep in mind:

  • Completing the intake form does not guarantee you a spot in the program.

  • Each student is allowed to complete only one project per cohort.

  • You must submit a new application for each cohort you wish to join - even if you’ve participated in the past.

  • Acceptance into previous cohorts does not guarantee acceptance into future ones. Each application is reviewed based on the most recent information you provide.

Step 2: Understand the Application Process

To ensure you stay on track, follow these important rules:

  1. Every application is reviewed carefully by the program team.

  2. Spots are limited and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

  3. Do not begin working on any project until you are officially accepted. Starting work early, and when you are not registered on the Riipen platform:

    1. Is not allowed.

    2. Does not mean you’ve been accepted.

    3. Does not guarantee payment.

Step 3: Get Ready Ahead of Time

While you’re waiting for your Breaking Barriers invitation, here’s how to prepare:

Required Documents

Make sure you have the following ready:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID

  • A Proof of Enrolment letter from your school

These will be needed if you’re selected and move on to verification.

Payment Information

If you're invited, you'll need to provide:

  • Your bank account details

  • Your bank branch address (find this with a quick Google search)

  • Your SIN (Social Insurance Number)

  • A copy of a government-issued ID

Step 4: If accepted to the program

If selected, you’ll receive an email invitation from team@riipen.com on November 17. We aim to notify all applicants in advance, but this may not always be possible.
