Best practices for managing your projects

Updated over a week ago

Once you begin a project, not only will you need to complete the needed tasks, but you will also need to manage the project along the way with the employer.

Here are the best ways you can properly manage your project.

Designate roles, responsibilities, and tasks

If you are working as part of a team, you will want to designate individuals within the team to specific roles and then further divide the responsibilities and tasks of the team amongst everyone.

It is recommended to have one person designated as the team leader who coordinates all work and is the main point of contact with the employer.

If the project has easily divisible work, share the work load among everyone, clearly identify who is to complete what tasks and by what deadlines.

Define your work hours

Most project work will be conducted remotely, which means you have more flexibility in how and when projects are complete. Consider setting consistent and clear project working hours. This can help you avoid late-night sessions and complete projects before their deadlines.

Apply what you know

You won't have all the answers to any project you work on. Take any prior experience and what you have learned inside the classroom and try to apply it to this real world situation. There will be gaps between what you know and what the project requires. Use this opportunity to research, ask questions, and think critically about the problem you are trying to solve.

Communicate your progress

As you complete work on the project, always share your progress with the employer as appropriate. This will help the employer understand where you are currently at, if any changes to the project need to be made, and can help them unblock you if anything is preventing you from accomplishing your tasks.

Treat it like a job

Be polite, professional, and submit high quality work. Many companies use these projects as part of their recruiting process, looking to identify highly skilled learners that they would like to hire full time. Think of this as an opportunity to learn how the company works and what sorts of challenges they are facing, you may find a career path you had never thought of before.
