Learner verification

Learner verification requirements

As a learner, when you join certain experiences, you may be required to provide verification of your identity, of your enrolment, or of any other information that the experience administrators deem as necessary.

Riipen has partnered with a third party provider, Persona, to complete the verification process. Persona is GDPR and CCPA compliant, ensuring safe PII storage. You can read more about this in Persona’s security page and their blog about safe PII storage.

General

ID verification requirements

When verifying your identity, you will need:

  • Select your ID country of origin

  • A valid photo ID, such as a:

    • Driver’s licence

    • Passport

    • Age of majority card (options vary by country of origin selected at the start of the verification process)

  • If you are under 18 years old, Riipen will need to manually review your ID verification.

  • A working webcam or front-facing camera with permission enabled for Persona to access your device’s camera.

Learner verification requirements

To verify as a learner, you must provide:

  • Valid proof of enrollment for the current semester and/or academic year.

  • The document must be issued by your post-secondary institution and should confirm that you are currently attending courses. Examples include:

    • Signed confirmation of enrollment letter from your institution

    • Unofficial transcript

    • Current course schedule with your name and institution name

    • Student card (if it includes term dates or an active date)

  • The following documents are NOT valid proof of enrollment:

    • School acceptance letters

    • Offers of admission

    • Selfies

    • Government IDs

    • Riipen program invitations

  • Submitting invalid documents may impact program eligibility and participation.

How to

Complete a verification

  1. When joining an experience or start projects within it, you will at some point be redirected to a screen which shows the verification needed, and whether or not you have completed them.

  2. Click on "Start verification" to start any of the verifications needed. You will be redirected to a new website where you will complete your verification. Follow the prompts on screen.

  3. Once you have completed the verification steps, you will be redirected back to Riipen. If there are more verifications to be completed, you will again be shown a list of all necessary verification with the option to "Begin Next Verification".

Once all verifications are completed, you will be able to continue joining the experience or starting a project.

Verification Review

Verifications, at times, require additional review. This occurs when either the identity verification portion or the company verification portion fail specific criteria required for successful verification after 1-3 attempts.

If your verification is in review, a member of Riipen’s Compliance Team will manually review your verification within 2-3 business days. During this process they will review that:

  • Identity verification:

    • You have used a valid photo government ID

    • Your likeness matches your ID

    • You did not attempt to spoof or use any filters during the selfie portion

    • You do not have multiple accounts

    • Your location upon submission

  • Proof of enrollment verifications:

    • You provided name matches your proof of enrollment name

    • Your proof of enrollment is for an eligible post secondary institution

    • Your proof of enrollment contains your full name, school name, and eligible term dates for the cohort

    • Your proof of enrollment is not altered or tampered in any way

Once a verification is reviewed, you will receive a notification of the decision: approved or declined. If your verification is declined, there was not sufficient information provided and you will need to retry. If your verification has not been reviewed within 2-3 business days, please ensure to check your email inbox for notices from compliance@riipen.com, as there are likely additional steps required of you before you can re-attempt verification or notices regarding your program and/or cohort eligibility.

Troubleshooting

My verification keeps failing after multiple attempts

If you have tried verification more than once and still cannot continue, try the following:

  • Confirm you are logged into to the correct Riipen account for the verification you are attempting.

  • If you have more than one Riipen account, you should merge your accounts if possible.

  • Make sure any required documentation for the verification is current, not expired, and is one of the acceptable forms required for the verification.

Proof of enrollment verification failed

If your proof of enrollment (POE) submission was rejected, check for these common reasons:

  • Missing or incorrect details: The document does not include your full name, institution name, or enrollment term.

  • Term-specific issues: The enrollment term shown has already passed or is for a future term. For example, a Winter term document may not be eligible for a Summer or Fall cohort.

  • Edited or annotated documents: Submissions with digitally edited, highlighted, or modified PDFs are rejected.

  • Expired or invalid documents: Documents showing expired enrollment terms, or incorrect document types (e.g. driver's licences), are not accepted.

To resolve a failed submission:

  1. Identify the reason: Review the rejection reason in the verification portal.

  2. Prepare a new document: Obtain an updated proof of enrollment that meets the requirements above. Ensure it reflects the correct term and includes all required details.

  3. Resubmit: Upload the new document through the verification portal. If a previous submission is still under review, wait for the final status before resubmitting.

  4. Allow processing time: Once resubmitted, allow 1–2 business days for review.

FAQ

How does Riipen prioritize and safeguard user privacy?

Riipen respects your privacy and is committed to protecting it through our compliance and privacy policy. You can read more about this in the following articles:

What happens if I stop verification half way through?

If you leave the verification process at any point before you reach the end, you will be able to resume the verification where you left off at any time. Simply re-visit the experience page and go to your required verifications as normal and click "Resume" on the verification in question.

What are the most common verification issues?

  • Choosing the wrong ID type. Please ensure that when choosing the ID type to verify that it is the same as the ID type you are providing and is a valid photo ID type (i.e. if providing a paper passport select “passport” and not “passport card”).

  • Selfie does not match ID. Please ensure that when verifying your identity that the image of your ID is taken in good lighting with minimal glare so that your ID portrayed is not obstructed and please ensure your selfies are taken in a well lit space.

  • Selfie liveness flag. Please ensure that all camera filters are disabled before beginning the verification process. Filters on webcams or front facing cameras can cause errors within the selfie verification process due to fraud risks regarding spoofing or deepfakes.

  • Multiple accounts. Riipen users cannot verify with multiple accounts. In order to proceed through the verification process you will need to merge your user accounts. Please note that if you are trying to verify for different account types (i.e. learner account and employer account) you will need to reach out to the support chat (Messages widget icon on the bottom right of your screen).

  • Unaccepted proof of enrollment. Please ensure that when submitting proof of enrolment your institution name, current semester enrolment, and first and last name are present. If your proof of enrollment is still not accepted you will need to restart the proof of enrollment verification process with your valid and up to date proof of enrollment.

Can I submit additional documents while my verification is under review?

No. Additional documents cannot be submitted during the review process. Wait for the final decision before uploading a new document.

What happens if my proof of enrollment verification fails?

Review the rejection reason, prepare an acceptable document, and resubmit it. You won't be penalized for processing time as long as you submitted an attempt at least one day before the deadline.

Why can't I complete my verification now?

If the verification period has ended, the portal will no longer allow new submissions. Ensure you complete verification within the designated window.

For immediate assistance, reach out through the support chat (Messages widget on the bottom right of your screen).
