Guide to Self-Assigning to Projects

This guide explains what self-assignment means, how to prepare, and how to choose a project strategically.

What Does “Self-Assigning” Mean?

Self-assignment gives you the opportunity to review available projects and select the one you want to work on.

Instead of being automatically placed into a project, you will have several days to explore project options, compare opportunities, and choose the project that best matches your interests, goals, and availability.

This is similar to applying for opportunities in the workplace - it requires preparation, decision-making, and professionalism.

Important Dates - June cohort

Project Review Period

You will receive access to review available projects on: May 18

This gives you time to carefully explore your options before project selection opens.

Self-Assignment Opens

You may officially self-assign to a project beginning: Monday, May 25 at 12:00 PM AST

Self-Assignment Deadline

You must select your project by: Thursday, May 28 at 11:59 PM AST

If you do not self-assign by the deadline:

  • You will lose your spot in the program

  • You will be removed from the platform

How to Prepare for Self-Assignment

The best way to succeed during self-assignment is to be organized before selection opens.

Projects fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a project reaches capacity, you will no longer be able to join it.

We strongly recommend that you:

  • Review all available projects carefully

  • Map out your top choices in advance

  • Prepare backup options in case your first choice fills quickly

  • Be ready to self-assign as soon as the selection period opens

Having a clear plan will give you the best chance of securing a project that interests you.

What Types of Projects Are Available?

Projects are offered by companies located across Atlantic Canada and may focus on a wide variety of business challenges.

Examples include:

  • Process improvement initiatives

  • Artificial intelligence and emerging technology research

  • Digital marketing and social media strategy

  • Event planning and management

  • Data analysis and reporting

  • Market research

  • Business operations and strategy

Each project gives you the opportunity to work on real tasks that support an active business or organization.

What If the Project Doesn’t Match My Exact Program or Skills?

That’s completely normal. These projects are designed to help you apply your learning in real workplace situations - even if the work is not an exact match to your studies or technical background.

The goal is to help you build:

  • Professional experience

  • Communication skills

  • Time management

  • Critical thinking and problem solving

  • Adaptability and workplace confidence

  • Teamwork and collaboration skills

You will also gain exposure to different industries, companies, and ways of working.

Many learners discover new interests or career paths through these experiences.

Professional Expectations

The employers participating in this program are real organizations that are investing time to mentor and support learners in Atlantic Canada while also receiving meaningful support for their business needs. Because of this, professionalism matters.

If you review the available projects and genuinely do not find a project you are willing to participate in, please do not self-assign simply to hold a spot.

Instead, notify Riipen as early as possible. This may allow another learner who wants the opportunity to participate.

We do not want employers to be left without learner participation or support after committing their time and resources. Communicating early and honestly is part of professional workplace behaviour.

Can I Switch Projects Later?

No. Once you self-assign to a project, your selection is final and you cannot switch to another project later.

This is why it is important to review your options carefully before making your decision.
